Creative Bus Shelter Initiative — Portland, Maine
As part of a Creative Bus Shelters Initiative to make bus stop shelters more aesthetically pleasing in Portland, Maine, a Portland resident and Ghana-born artist, Ebenezer Akapo, designed a colorful bus stop that incorporated patterns comprising Ghanaian hope and friendship symbols, which cast their patterns on the sides of buses and sidewalks throughout the day. The design was inspired by the idea of providing hope and comfort inspired by the resident composition of the city, a mixture of immigrants and native Mainers. Akapo’s design supported the Creative Bus Shelters Initiative’s goal of promoting bus ridership, diversity and inclusion.
