San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) — Muni Forward
SFMTA’s Muni Forward is a set of transit improvements packaged under one vision, which is used as a tool for communicating a broad set of improvements and defines the agency’s prioritization process.
In the early 2010s, SFMTA conducted an in-depth evaluation of the Muni system. Recommendations that emerged from this planning process focused on reliability, on-time performance, safer boardings, more user-friendly customer experiences, more accessible service and faster travel times. Many of these recommendations are now being implemented as part of Muni Forward, a set of projects and planning efforts focused on safety, speed and reliability. These efforts include reliability improvements such as red transit lanes and bus bulbs; real-time information; expansion of service; more Rapid lines; new vehicles and an emphasis on equity.
In 2014, SFMTA also adopted the Muni Service Equity Policy, which requires the development of a biannual Service Equity Strategy in conjunction with the SFMTA budget process. In each Service Equity Strategy document, SFMTA identifies neighborhoods with high concentrations of low-income households, minority residents, residents with disabilities and households without access to private vehicles. Metro already uses many of these metrics to identify EFCs but could consider adding criteria related to residents with disabilities. SFMTA uses data on on-time performance, service gaps, travel times to and from key destinations, crowding, capacity utilization and customer satisfaction to track service quality and identify specific improvements for each Equity Strategy neighborhood.
Starting in 2015, SFMTA began updating bus stops with new signage including route, accessibility information and self-powered solar lighting. In 2018, SFMTA announced plans to upgrade all 3,600 bus stops with these amenities.
