Cool Green Shelters — Maryland
A Maryland-based company, Living Canopies, developed Cool Green Shelters, which provide protective, comfortable, energy-producing and beautiful transit shelter for bus passengers. The shelters swap the traditional metal roof of bus stops for a native plant canopy that provides evaporative cooling, reduces the urban heat island effect (UHI) and harvests rainwater into a reservoir below the stop. The stop is equipped with solar panels that power the LED lighting and USB charging stations, making the stop self-sufficient. The company also aims to create a new business model based on governance and an environmental social framework, allowing areas to have bus stops in more places. In the future, the creators of Cool Green Shelters hope to utilize the untapped benefits of a bus stop to make it an actual neighborhood amenity, such as incorporating mini food pantries, lending libraries, public art and urban agriculture.
