Tuboteca — Curitiba, Brazil
At a tube station in Curitiba, Brazil, the Tuboteca project was implemented, which provides a small library at the bus stop where passengers can browse and borrow books without formally registering. With this freedom to choose a book, users can also decide when to return it. According to the mayor of the city, who inaugurated this project, the goal is to bring community members closer to public facilities and establish a connection to the city while encouraging reading in public spaces and improving access to reading. Each Tuboteca, or small library, can hold 150 books, ranging from literature, short stories and children’s books, to comics, poetry and novels. The Tubotecas collect books through donations, diversifying the book options in the Tubotecas around the city. After two years of activity, the project collected 136,000 books from various companies, institutions, community members and local writers. Of these 136,000 books, 96,000 went toward the Tubotecas, and the remaining books that did not fit the criteria went to community and rural libraries, hospitals and prisons, reading houses, specialized libraries and residents’ associations.
